For field-based work that requires single-operator power for welding, carbon arc gouging, auxiliary power, or running an air compressor to perform critical repair and maintenance functions, the Big Blue 600 Air Pak is the most reliable, versatile machine available to keep your worksite equipment fully functional and make you more productive throughout the day.

Engine Driven Welder Feedback
Miller - Engine-Driven Welders - Big Blue® Air Pak™
Starting to look at a new welder combo just would like some feed back on this beast or if anyone happens to have one themselves.
I like a few other machines however they don't have quite everything that I would want and need.
I'll be honest I have only looked at red and blue, but if someone has another company I'm willing to give them a look.
It must be able to run a Hypertherm 85.

Stick with red and blue. I used an air Pak a few years go for a few months on demo; its a good machine. Great for heavy use applications. it has a decent arc to it. It think it's up for debate some of Millers smaller units have a smoother arc. This machine will centrally get the job done.

I looked at the link, I love Miller, they under rate their performance, AND over perform!
I have used them for years at different employers, I own a MM 210 MIG, a 250 AC/DC Stick and a Spectrum 625 Plasma, ALL quality machines!
For $31,500. WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GOING TO WELD????
The big problem with combination machines is which unit will need repair first? The answer is both because the broken one usually stops the working one. AND they both have to go to the shop so you are down both machines. - TFPaceStainless

The machine you show on your link produces 20 kW three phase. Go with the Hypertherm 105. If you have three phase at your shop. The 85 is single phase only IIRC.

Either way that is a load for that machine IMO. - Aluminum

The 85 is either three phase or 220. I have a 85 in shop now and I love it, I was thinking of upgrading to a 105 and throwing the 85 on the truck, hence why I would like to have such a large machine.
Timw brings up a great point, one that I had not thought of, if that machine goes down, it all does, but isnt that the same as if the truck breaks down, so does the welder?
I understand your point, but at this point its a justification of space, and weight that I was looking at, however, The BB 400's do look nice, just don't have all the bells and whistles this one would have.
The arc is a issue, in everyone humble opinion who has the better 'arc', I was about always told Lincolns are the way to go for that route.
If I were to get a different machine, I would still have to mount a air source, and make it readily available.
As well as I would probably have a good chuck of change left over to buy some other equip. - TFPaceStainless

I have a friend that has two of the Lincoln machines that have air compressors built in. They arc gouge and need lots of air and high amperage too. They have had no issues with either of these machines. One has Deutz power and the other Kubota. I was surprised that Millers machine produced 20 kW.

In general I want such a large machine so that instead of air arcing I can just run a plasma gouging operation, it should be fast allowing for faster job performance. Also I would have a machine that could cut up to 1 inch easily.
I'll take another look at Lincoln and see what they offer, last time I checked I didn't see one quite comparable to a miller. - Stainless

When I bought my Miller Spectrum 625 Plasma cutter (40 amp) I emailed Miller asking if my Miller 200 amp/4kw portable would run the Plasma or was the power too dirty for it. They said I would have no problem with it.
At the time (2002) I went in a different direction, I kept everything in the the shop and didn't need to offer portable service.
I never liked Air Arc, it's loud, dirty, smelly and makes a hell of a mess and is also hard on the machine to keep shorting out the lead at high amp settings. Plasma on the other hand is so much more efficent as long as you can get at the area with the torch. - Titanium

These Craigslist listings don't last very long. I'm offering the link below for comparison purposes only. I have no financial interest but here's a used (1996) Miller Air Pak for $9,000. It appears to be very clean.....$31,XXX new?....cough, cough, cough. That's a lot of jack for a welder. The durn thing weighs a ton, too.

We have a Miller Trailblazer 302 Airpack and use it for air/arc gouging as well as running our Miller Spectrum 875 Autoline plasma. We have yet to have any issues with it. List is around 12K but you can find them online for close to 10K new. Also has a very stable arc when welding.

That Miller 302 is a gas, my question is, I was always told that diesels held up far better, with less working noise around the job site.

302 diesel, you cannot run the Hyper 85 full bore off the 302, I have an older Miller
Plasma it is only 55 amp max output works well with the 302's but I also have a
separate engine driven compressor or air.
Keep in mind any good pricing from a Miller distributor should be between 20-25%
off list, with my LWS I can deduct 24.5% off list and have my price with out a call
accessories are different. But all welders shop units or engine drive are on the same
discount schedule, if they offer any price that is more than 20% off list tell them to
pound sand.
Big Blue Airpak is a lot of machine could you get buy with a 302D (~$8000) and turn
your plasma down and get a separate compressor? $25,500 for the BB AP deluxe is
a lot of coin, you have to do a lot of cutting and welding to get a decent ROI on that. - Aluminum

Yes I agree, 25k for all of that is quite a bit.
I reworked a bit of my thinking, more turning to a BB400, has a diesel, has the power that I could ever use.
My question is I have heard of others, mainly around my area, buying a bigger machine and then putting a screw compressor on to the machine.
However, I am wondering if I will run into horse power problems, as I have little to no experience with a screw compressor and exactly what horse power it will pull.
A quick skim over the internet tells me around 5-15 horse.
Hell if anything, I'll just take your advice and get a separate machine.

What about a Lincoln Air Vantage? Depending on what part of Ohio you are in, why not drive up to Euclid and take a mig or tig class. Not that you need the education, I'm assuming you don't, but you get a purchase certificate good for one order of their equipment at factory cost. It would save you probably 5x the cost of the class, and you could try the machine out for a week. Or maybe just call them and see if you can try out the machine.

This is how I have sized things in the past, if you have lets say a 5 HP electrical load,Originally Posted by MwMYes I agree, 25k for all of that is quite a bit.

aka compressor, and you are running it off of a Welder Generator, you are going to
use up roughly 7.5 Hp of the engine power, this rough guess works out empirically.
That leaves you 7.5 less Hp from the engine to generate electricity with and may or
may not give you enough power to run the plasma. I have on several occasions
stalled the motor on my old TB 302 gas by over loading it. This does no damage to
the machine itself, but is annoying when you are working in the middle of a farm field
and all your light goes out... In the end, I went with a separate compressor engine
driven, and used the TB to run the Plasma but I am running a Spectrum 2050 (55amp)
machine vs. you 85 amp machine that difference is not trivial.
To help with this there are charts in the owners manuals on Miller Equipment that
show various power draws on the welder and generator sides.
Also I like the redundancy, if my compressor takes a crap, I am not out the welder
and vice versa.
